The Mystery of the Haunted Cabin
Published in School & Library Binding by Houghton Mifflin Co (Juv) (September, 1986)
Authors: Judy Delton and Anne Sibley O'Brien
Average review score:

Mystery not a mystery
I would not recommend this book to other kids. The plot wasstupid and the haunting was lame.

A book full of adventure.
I really enjoy this book. It started not good intill the part when the mom, Ms. Harrison bought a cabin up in the mountains for summer vacation. The reason the mom bought the cabin was because is son Barry and her daughter Robin was telling their mother that everybody else at school was going away for summer vacation why don't we go some where. The story got excited chapter four beacause the chapter says it. After chapter four the story got very exciting and scary as well. I will recoment this book to other people and for children that could read. I know most of the people that read this book will enjoy it as much as I did. Remember that this book starts pretty good but the end of the book is the real story. You will know what I mean at the end of the story. I hope you read this review so you could look up this book. Remember in this a mystery is only a page away!!!!!

Rhapsody in Time
Published in Paperback by Pocket Books (June, 1994)
Author: Judith O'Brien
Average review score:

Not up to par
I found this book disappointing. The plot was fun, and the characters were exciting (although I missed most of the '20's jazz references), but depth and believability were sorely lacking. When did Alec and Liz fall in love? What did they have in common? How could he have instantly believed her story about being from the future? And I have to say, if I went back to 1927 to live, I would be sorely tempted to beat the stock market crash and to do my best to prevent WW2. Plus, didn't Liz have any qualms about never seeing her friends and family who lived in 1992 ever again? This book just wasn't worth it.

one of the best time travel books i have read.
I normally stay away from time travel romance books, but this was one of the better ones out there. The author clearly loves the roaring twenties and, through that love, manages to bring the reader back to that time period. The hero and heroine are quite loveable and even though some events which occur seem quite unlikely, it is still a wonderful book that is well written and keeps the interest level at a maximum

Robert Altman: Hollywood Survivor
Published in Hardcover by Continuum Pub Group (November, 1900)
Author: Daniel O'Brien
Average review score:

A great but flawed director, a severely flawed bio
Daniel O'Brien puts together an outsider's version of the great director's life in film. O'Brien is obviously a faux-critic/fan of the director that can get no closer to his subject than to have seen each of his films repeatedly. Basically this amateurish drivel reviews each of Altman's films with a weak eye while dropping vague and incidental biographical info along the way. The first edition that I unfortunately labored through featured numerous misprints and spelling errors to boot. This book delivers no insight or clear perspective on the enigmatic director whatsoever.

Excellent reading
Daniel O'Brien's book on Robert Altman is a fascinating insight into the workings of the director's films. I found it particularly interesting the way O'Brien leads the reader through the journey from Altman's beginings in television through to his more commercial successes. For the first time, I could understand what it's like to start from nothing and make your way as a director. Hope for all us film students. I thouroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to film students and anyone interested in the film industry. Excellent.

The Times Square Story
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (October, 1998)
Author: Geoffrey O'Brien
Average review score:

Potential destroyed by brevity
Unique concept, but is that all there is? I read it in Borders bookstore in 20 minutes!!! Additionally, the book is supposed to be celebrating the sleeze era of Times Square, yet it seems to be more interested in generating a noir movie myth than looking at the reality.

Thoroughly engaging. An rich, exciting, funny journey.
The Amazon.com description is accurate. The writing is on the mark and reads like every detective novel you ever read combined with a be-bop rythym of New York as it really was. Beautifully designed and thoughtfully paced, this is a perfect marriage of word, image and design. The most original book I've seen in years. You simply can't put it down.

Artist/Author: Contemporary Artists' Books
Published in Hardcover by Distributed Art Publishers (February, 1998)
Authors: Cornelia Lauf, Clive Phillpot, Jane Role, and Glenn O'Brien
Average review score:

The Pictures
The best feature of this book is the full color. It's a lavish production; very nearly a coffee table book.

The accompanying text was a little obtuse (at least to me), a little judgemental (okay, a lot), and defined the medium of artists' books in a way that I just don't agree with.

Worth having, for the images and for the impetus to clarify just exactly *why* I disagreed with certain pronouncements, but can't hold a candle to other recent books about artists' books.

Bolivia National Parks
Published in Map by Treaty Oak (2000)
Author: Liam P. O'Brien
Average review score:

Disappointing
I did not find this map particularly helpful, but then there is not much available on Bolvia. I was looking for a detailed relief map. This map is somewhat simplistic, but some people may find it useful. In my opinion, it does not contain a great deal of information.

Decisions About Re-Engineering Briefings on Issues and Options
Published in Hardcover by Chapman & Hall (November, 1995)
Authors: B. O'Brien, Chapman, Chapman & Hall, and Hall
Average review score:

OK if you know the literature or want a guide to it.
The author acknowledges re-engineering is a management fashion accessory but cuts thro' the consultancy-speak to the useful ideas. These he structures and comments on critically. The reader will find the style rather abstract unless she has a prior knowleldge of the key books and papers. The concrete case studies are accessible via the bibliography but his very brief resumes of them are only barely adequate. A student would find the book helpful in her quest for the older materials and a still useful framework for assimilating the new. The manager with little time to spare could read it via its well structured indexes linked to its bibliography. His treatment of the subject lies between the bombast of Hammer and the cynicism of Strassman.

Korn Shell Programming by Example
Published in Paperback by Que (February, 2001)
Authors: Dennis O'Brien and David Pitts
Average review score:

Good Book for Total Beginners Only
I was disappointed in this book. Most of the book covers things that directly relate to Unix, and not necessarily to korn shell programming. However, if you are new to unix and/or new to korn shell scripting then this should be a good book for you.
